PERSONAL STATEMENT OF CARDINAL ROBERT FRANCIS PREVOST
To the faithful, the press, and all who have placed their trust in my ministry:
It is with a heavy heart, yet a spirit seeking total truth and clarity, that I address the recent reports and images circulating regarding my private life.
I confirm that during my time away from my official duties in Italy, I formed a deep, personal relationship with Maya. What began as a profound spiritual and intellectual connection grew into a deep affection that crossed the boundaries of my vows.
I do not write this to make excuses or to diminish the gravity of the commitments I undertook before God and the Church. As a human being, I found myself torn between the sacred duty of my calling and a profound earthly love. Maya brought warmth, art, and humanity into a life that had long been lived in quiet isolation.I acknowledge the pain, confusion, and disappointment this disclosure may cause to the faithful and to the Holy See. For any scandal or loss of trust my actions have brought upon the Church, I ask for forgiveness—Perdón.
