PART 1: THE PASSPORT THAT EXPOSED A SECRET
“Babe, don’t panic, but I think I left my passport at home.”
I turned toward my husband, Dereck, convinced he was joking. We were standing inside a crowded airport, preparing to board the anniversary vacation we’d spent six months planning, and our flight was scheduled to depart shortly after nine that morning.
“Dereck, please tell me you’re kidding. We’ve been preparing for this trip for months.”
He searched his jacket pockets and opened his carry-on bag, pretending to check every compartment. When he insisted that the passport was probably in our bedroom, I immediately suggested calling my mother, Vivienne, who lived only ten minutes from our house.
“I’ll ask Mom to check your bedside drawer and bring it here. There’s no way you can drive home and return before boarding.”
Dereck reacted with surprising urgency, insisting that I shouldn’t involve her. His sudden objection confused me because my mother had always been happy to help us, especially when something important was at stake.
