I thought I was coming home to an empty house and a quiet weekend. What I found in my own back patio showed me how little I’d seen of my daughter’s life, and how much the people I trusted had been hiding from me.
Part One: The Light in the Back Patio
The road closure outside Saltillo was supposed to cost me a day. Instead, the client pushed the whole shipment back a week, and by Thursday afternoon I was turning my truck around and heading home to León, three days ahead of schedule.
I didn’t call ahead. I told myself I wanted to surprise everyone. The truth is, I was tired, and I liked the idea of walking in and having Sofia look up from her homework and grin at me the way she used to when she was little.
Then I remembered nobody would be there to surprise. Patricia had flown to Cancún on Monday with her mother, Elvira, her sister, Lorena, and Lorena’s daughter, Bianca. Sofia had stayed behind. Patricia had told me it was Sofia’s choice, that she had exams coming and didn’t want to fall behind. A neighbor would look in on her, and Patricia would call every night.
