PART 2 — THE WATER TURNED BLUE
The water was not clear anymore.
A faint blue cloud had spread around the pendant, as though a drop of ink had been released beneath the surface. At the bottom of the glass lay a pale, chalky sediment. Morgan held the glass to the morning light and saw something else: a tiny silver-colored capsule had slipped from the hollow back of the pendant.
Her first thought was that the necklace was cheap costume jewelry. Her second was the elderly woman’s warning. Her third was that Julian had insisted she put it on immediately.
She set the glass on a folded towel, photographed it, and resisted the urge to touch the cloudy water. She didn’t know what had leached out, whether it was dangerous, or whether it had anything to do with the warning. She wasn’t going to find out by experimenting on herself.
Behind her, the bedroom door creaked.
