A young man began visiting my seventy-nine-year-old neighbor every day. Then I entered her house and discovered something that made my heart stop․․․😨😨
I’m thirty-four years old and live in a peaceful neighborhood near the edge of town. My next-door neighbor, Margaret, is a seventy-nine-year-old widow I have known since I was a child.
When I was young, she often watched me while my mother worked. She cooked for me, comforted me during storms, and treated me like family.

As Margaret became older, I tried to repay her kindness. I delivered groceries, helped clean her house, carried her laundry, and checked on her several times each week.
Then, about a month ago, everything changed.
One evening, Margaret opened her door only halfway and told me I no longer needed to visit.
“I have Ryan now,” she said with a strange smile.
When I asked who Ryan was, she explained that he was a delivery driver who had brought her a package. Then she added that they had fallen in love.
At first, I assumed she was joking.
But two days later, I saw him leaving her house.
He looked no older than twenty-four. He wore faded jeans, a plain sweatshirt, and worn sneakers. He did not appear wealthy or particularly charming. He simply looked like a young man struggling to get by.
Over the following two weeks, I never saw Margaret outside.
Not once.
Instead, I watched Ryan come and go almost every day. Sometimes he stayed for hours. Other times, his car remained outside overnight.
Before long, he was unlocking Margaret’s front door with his own key.
I tried not to judge the situation, but my concern continued to grow.
Margaret stopped answering my calls. Whenever I tried to reach her, I received the same short message:
“I’m fine. Don’t worry about me.”
The words did not sound like her.
Margaret usually sent long messages filled with questions, advice, and reminders to wear a coat. She would never reply with the exact same sentence again and again.
Then one afternoon, a package addressed to Margaret was mistakenly delivered to my porch.
I carried it next door and knocked.
No one answered.
I knocked again and called her name, but the house remained completely silent.
By then, I could no longer ignore the uneasy feeling in my stomach.
I returned home, found the emergency key Margaret had given me years earlier, and let myself inside.
The house was spotless.
Too spotless.
There were no dishes in the sink, no newspaper on the table, and none of Margaret’s usual belongings scattered around the living room.
Everything looked carefully arranged and strangely untouched.
Neither Margaret nor Ryan was anywhere to be seen.
Then I heard it.
A faint knocking sound rose from somewhere beneath the house.
It was coming from the basement.
My blood turned cold.
I dropped the package and rushed toward the stairs.

I rushed down the basement stairs, barely remembering to turn on the light.
“Margaret?” I called.
The knocking stopped.
