I was six weeks away from marrying a man who needed his mother for everything. Then he suggested I should learn her routine. I agreed to one last lesson, but not for the reason he thought.

I’m 32, and until recently, I thought the hardest part of planning my wedding would be convincing two families we didn’t need a chocolate fountain.

Turns out, it was convincing my thirty-four-year-old fiancé he could survive without his mother cutting his toenails.

Three years earlier, I met Robert at a company holiday party.

“Marketing?” he asked, glancing at my name badge.

His mother cutting his toenails.

“Guilty. You?”

“Sales. So technically, we’re supposed to blame each other when things go wrong.”

“Only when you’re wrong.”

He grinned. “This could get interesting.”

“Need help?” he asked as I wrestled my purse free from a Christmas tree.
