His ex arrived in red, grabbed my hand, and begged me not to marry him. I almost ignored her until my fiancé saw what she gave me and completely lost control.
Inside the envelope was a photograph.
At first, I did not understand what I was looking at.
It showed Evan standing outside a courthouse beside Vanessa.
The date printed in the corner was from 14 months earlier.
Fourteen months.
Evan and I had been engaged for 18 months.
I looked at him.
“What is this?”
His face had gone completely white.
“It’s not what you think.”
Vanessa laughed once.
“Of course that’s what you say.”
I looked back at the photograph.
Evan was wearing the navy coat I had bought him for Christmas that year.
I remembered that coat because he told me he had ruined it during a work trip.
He said coffee spilled all over it at the airport.
In the photograph, it looked perfectly clean.
“Why were you with her 14 months ago?”
Evan glanced around.
Our guests were watching now.
My mother had stopped talking to the caterer.
His best man, Luke, was frozen beside the bar.
Even the photographer had lowered her camera.
“Brianna,” Evan said quietly, “not here.”
My name is Brianna.
Until that moment, I had never heard him say it like a warning.
I took a step back.
“No. You told me you hadn’t spoken to Vanessa in almost four years.”
“I hadn’t. Not really.”
Vanessa stared at him.
“You were in my apartment.”
Evan snapped, “Shut up.”
The garden went silent.
I had seen Evan angry before.
Traffic.
Bad customer service.
A contractor who overcharged us.
But I had never seen that look on his face.
Cold.
Controlled.
Not embarrassed.
Threatened.
I looked at Vanessa.
“What happened 14 months ago?”
She opened her mouth.
Evan stepped between us.
“She contacted me because she wanted money.”
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“That is a lie.”
“Then explain the courthouse.”
“I was filing for a protective order.”
Something inside me dropped.
I stared at her.
“Against Evan?”
She nodded.
Evan turned toward me.
“It was dismissed.”
“Was it filed?”
“Yes, but—”
“Why?”
“Because she was obsessed.”
Vanessa reached into her purse again.
Evan moved toward her.
I held up my hand.
“Don’t.”
He stopped.
Maybe it was my tone.
Maybe it was the fact that 100 people were watching him.
Vanessa pulled out folded papers.
Court documents.
I did not know enough about legal language to understand every line, but I recognized Evan’s full name.
