PART 2

For several seconds, no one moved.

The music had stopped, though I couldn’t remember anyone asking the musicians to stop playing. The late-afternoon sunlight still poured across the lawn, touching the white roses and the rows of gold chairs, but the wedding had lost its warmth.

Every face had turned toward Julian.

He was still holding the DNA report.

His eyes moved across the pages again and again, as if the words might rearrange themselves into something easier to accept.

Noah stood beside me, one hand wrapped around my finger. Ethan was watching a butterfly drift near the flower arrangements. Grace had tucked herself against Rachel’s side, while Lily stared at the crowd with the solemn, gray-blue eyes that had always reminded me of the Whitmore family.

Four children.

Four undeniable answers to a question Julian had never thought to ask.

Margaret was the first to find her voice.

“Those results could be falsified.”

Rachel stepped forward, her expression calm but firm.

“They were completed through an accredited laboratory in Switzerland. The samples were collected by medical professionals, and the chain of custody was documented from beginning to end.”

Margaret stared at her.

“And you are?”

“Dr. Rachel Monroe. Evelyn’s physician and legal representative for the children’s medical records.”

Charles reached for the papers in Julian’s hands. Julian did not resist. His father read the first page, then the second. His expression changed slowly, not with outrage but with the heavy comprehension of a man watching his carefully arranged future collapse into a shape he had never imagined.

The report did not say that the children resembled Julian.

It did not say that their eyes or expressions carried pieces of him.

It said, in precise black lettering, that Julian Whitmore was their biological father.

All four of them.

Charles lowered the report.

“How old are they?”

“Almost two,” I answered.

His gaze sharpened.

“You were pregnant when you signed the agreement.”

“Yes.”

“And you never told us?”

I looked toward Julian.

“I tried to tell him something that day.”

Julian closed his eyes.

The memory reached him before I needed to explain it. The library. The check. His arm around Vanessa. My question.

Tell me not to sign.

He had heard me.

He simply hadn’t chosen me.

“I didn’t know,” he said quietly.

The words were so soft that only those closest to us heard them.
